It starts behind this copper door. The magic I mean. The transformation from plain shiny copper sheets, to beautiful art and furniture.
Inside, the copper begins as shiny sheets from the supply house.
Almost mirror-like, they glisten in the sunlight and can be blinding at times. Copper is such a beautiful organic material. Mined from the earth and “refined in the fire.” Hmmmm. . . that sounds familiar. Life is certainly like that.
Simple hand tools cut, shape, texture and transform the copper.
The work-space is worn. This is where imagination and skill come into play. There are no patterns in Mike’s shop. He has some rough sketches and notes on measurements here and there, but everything is in his head. He sees the copper in a new light and his hands just seem to follow.
The results are breathtaking and unique. Some simple, some intricate. Always a translation of the beauty of the material.
“Hands that are calloused are being used for their purpose.” Do your hands have a story to tell?
